About this mentorship program

We invite talented students and recent grads who have an interest in intellectual property law to apply for our ADAPT Mentorship Program. This program seeks to identify and mentor undergraduate, graduate and law students with an interest in intellectual property law (primarily patents, but please apply if you are interested in copyrights or trademarks!). We are open to applicants in the US, UK and EU. The UK and EU program extends not just to students, but professionals new to their career. The purpose of the program is to cultivate the next generation of legal talent and provide exposure to a range of occupations in intellectual property law, including litigation, prosecution, transactions, technology specialists, and legal operations. ADAPT seeks to foster an inclusive environment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, sexual preference, physical or mental disability, marital status, genetic information, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.

What is the program?

The yearlong program will provide mentees the opportunity to meet with mentors (networking!) from member companies and law firms to learn about different aspects of IP careers, how to navigate one's way to an IP career, and how to succeed in the field. Past years' programming has included panels on Life as a Practitioner, Patents 101, Applying to Law School, Taking the Patent Bar, Working at a Firm, and Mentee Speed Networking in addition to 1:1 mentoring.

Who’s involved?

ADAPT was founded by a group of friends who are passionate about growing and supporting the IP industry. We have also happily been joined by a number of companies and law firms over the past few years. Many of members have businesses with robust intellectual property portfolios, which require specialist legal teams to maintain, protect, enforce and defend their rights. Through ADAPT, they seek to work together to address the shortage of legal talent in intellectual property law and to provide opportunities to exceptional candidates.

Am I the right fit?

Do you have a thirst for knowledge and a passion for problem solving? We’re looking for candidates with a creative mindset, a collaborative mentality, and who are interested in exploring a potential career in intellectual property law. Currently, the ADAPT Mentorship Program works with science and engineering majors who are eligible to become patent attorneys, but also individuals interested in patent litigation, data science, paralegal and patent agent work. Not all of these roles require a STEM background.
